While it’s so easy for stylists to play it safe for award ceremonies, it is much more exciting to see actors wearing distinctive jewelry on the red carpet. At last night’s Academy Awards, we were not disappointed. Here are our top picks for jewelry looks at this year’s Oscars.
Lupita Nyong’o – who it seemed like everyone was rooting for to win for her incredible performance in 12 Years A Slave – has looked absolutely impeccable at every award ceremony this season. While she went for ‘edgy’ at the Golden Globes and was glamorous at the BAFTAs, she arrived looking like a princess to the Oscars. A pale blue Prada dress – that she said she wore to remind her of Nairobi – was accented by Fred Leighton geometric earrings, and a stunning diamond headband. Yellow gold bangles and a ring shaped like a frog – her family’s totem – added warmth and personality. Lupita will be one to watch out for on the red carpet for many years to come!
We spotted Cate Blanchett on the red carpet before she was approached for interview – and while the actor is known for her striking fashion choices, we were floored last night. How incredible are these drop earrings? Swaying with her every move, the Chopard pair were embellished with opals and diamonds set in white gold. Scooping the Best Actress award for the titular role in Blue Jasmine, she was an absolute vision.
We don’t think we’ve ever seen Charlize Theron look less than stunning, but last night she truly glowed. In a plunging Dior black gown that fitted her perfectly, she wore a $15 million Harry Winston diamond necklace, finished with classic diamond stud earrings. Hair tucked behind her ears and a subtle pink lip, she oozed Hollywood glamour.
While she lost out on her award to Lupita, we can’t feel too sorry for Jennifer Lawrence. For one, she picked up an award last year for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook. For another, her ensemble made her a total winner in our eyes. A Dior gown in the house’s iconic 40s peplum silhouette, her short hair was expertly styled to look effortlessly windswept. A 100-carat Neil Lane necklace, reportedly worth $2 million, was draped down at the back – similar to her Chopard style from last year. Another case of déjà vu? When the star took yet another tumble, this time on the red carpet as she arrived.
Supporting her husband (Brad was a producer for 12 Years A Slave), Angelina Jolie looked radiant in Elie Saab. Those 42-carat bezel-set diamond earrings in yellow gold were the perfect finishing touch for an elegant ensemble. We can’t decide which of her looks is better; this, or her BAFTAs Saint Laurent tux!
Which was your favorite jewelry look of the night? Were you surprised by any of the award announcements?
